Water-Based Wood Paint Refinishing Guide for Furniture & Woodwork
Water-based wood paint is popular for DIY wood renovation because of low odor, fast drying time and good grain retention. It works great for wooden doors, cabinets, tables and indoor wood trim.
Step 1: Clean & Sand Wood Surface
Wipe grease and dirt away. Sand the old wood surface gently to remove scratches and peeling old finish. Wipe off all sand dust.
Step 2: Repair Defects
Fill nail holes and deep scratches with wood putty. Sand smooth after putty dries.
Step 3: Apply Water-Based Wood Paint
Stir paint well. Apply thin coats instead of one thick coat. First coat dries fast. Light sand between coats for smoother finish.
Step 4: Final Inspection
Check uniformity of color and gloss. Add one extra top coat if you want better scratch resistance.
Pro Tips
Do not paint in high humidity.
Thin the paint only if manufacturer instructions allow.
Water-based paint cleans up easily with water.
